An array of literary characters sprung from their pages and into school corridors with Lewis Carroll’s Alice, Roald Dahl’s Oompa Loompas and Katniss Everdeen of Hunger Games fame all gracing Heathfield’s classrooms. The staff also joined in the fun of fancy dress with Miss Wells’ wonderful effort on a Jekyll and Hyde costume joining characters from novels as diverse as Matilda, The Great Gatsby and Birdsong along with universally popular children’s classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar. A special mention must go to Mercedes, Sophia and Tansy in Form I who were award prizes for their efforts as Harry Potter, Tweedle Dum and Cruella DeVil.
Throughout the day, both staff and students put their knowledge to the test in a Treasure Trail of quotes placed around the school which required them to name the novel, and many lessons took on a literary edge. The day was rounded off by a tea in the Library, organised by Mrs Bramley, at which Forms I and II along with some staff enjoyed tea, cakes and a beautiful reading of Yuri Nagibin’s magical short story, The Winter Oak.
All in all, the day was extremely enjoyable and a great success and we hope that it has inspired the whole Heathfield community to get reading.
