Assembly coincided with White Fashion Day making it all the more interesting and slightly nerve wracking as the white carpet walkway was in close proximity. In the end it was Fourth, Fifth and LVI Form girls from Somerville who designed the winning entry.
The days that followed saw experiments demonstrated such as magical chemical writing and match head mini rockets. Girls from all year groups took part in some of our Open Day activities including making fluorescent slime, coloured alginate beads and fake snow, attempting mirror writing and pH painting a card. The week saw the inauguration of our new Van der Graaf generator with some literally ‘hair raising moments’ captured on video. The week’s experiments concluded with dry ice cold mocktails being served in the Assembly Hall. On the last day of term and of Science Week, Friday 20 March 2015, a partial solar eclipse ‘had been arranged’ by the Science department! After a quick explanation of the physics involved using our science prefects Maria and Ranti (both LVI Form) to model the earth and the moon, eclipse glasses were handed out. The whole school then streamed out onto the lacrosse pitches in eager anticipation.
Sadly typical English weather was the enemy and extensive cloud cover meant nothing could be seen except a slight dip in the amount of daylight. As result the BBC coverage being screened live in the theatre meant girls saw the 100% eclipse in the Faroe Islands instead. Despite this disappointment another fun and exciting Science Week was had by all, with one pupil being heard to describe one of the days as ‘The Best Day Ever!’ Special thanks must go to Anna Milner and Ian Whitehurst, our legendary science technicians, without whom Science Week would not be possible. Thinking caps are already on in the Science department as wacky and explosive experiments are thought up and designed for next year!
