Junior Showcase 2014

The theme for the evening was ‘Grimm and Gruesome Tales’ and every girl in the lower school was involved. The work was the culmination of their classwork with Mrs de Ferrer this term and it was evident that they had all worked very hard indeed.

Each year group had been given a different version of a Brothers Grimm fairy tale, which had been modernised by Carol Ann Duffy, the Poet Laureate. Staged by the girls themselves in small groups, the audience was treated to eleven short stories which ranged from The Golden Goose to Bluebeard and Ashputtel to The Emperor’s New Clothes.  Grim and gruesome though some of these stories were, with heels and toes being cut off to fit into slippers, decapitated heads and wicked sisters’ eyes being plucked out by vengeful doves, these stories were imaginatively retold through a multitude of different theatrical devices which included costume, puppetry, multi rolling, and video. This was story telling 21st century style. It was a thoroughly enjoyable and very entertaining evening and it is particularly pleasing to be able to say that it really was a whole school show.

Many congratulations to everyone involved.
