Conference: Creative Processes at the Institute of Education, London

Unfortunately, due to an accident on the M25 we were a little late but managed to catch the end of the talk by Cornelia Parker who was talking about her latest project inspired by the Magna Carta on the British judicial system. Cornelia Parker is a great speaker and an artist who is personally inspirational to me. I particularly like her exploding shed.

In contrast to Cornelia’s sometimes destructive approach to creative processes, James Ducker spoke about his hand crafted high quality shoes using very traditional skills and the emphasis is on the quality of making. Getting a glimpse into his workshop was like entering a lost world of the past values.

It was then the turn of Jock McFadyen whose art was tactile and very painterly with impasto techniques. It was personal and reflected the times in which he has lived. He was quirky and humorous in the way he spoke and his paintings were strong and powerful.

The conference finished with Jeremy Deller talking about his work and in particular the piece he submitted to the Venice Biennale. Representing your country in the Venice Biennale (International Art Exhibition that takes place every two years) is highly prestigious. Jeremy Deller challenges political and financial hierarchy that does not always sit comfortably but definitely makes us think about our environment and how precious it is and how we have to be less impulsive and selfish.

All in all this was a perfect activity for the last week of term and provided lots of food for thought.
