The lesson started with a quick introduction to different types of bees and how the hierarchy of a honey-bee hive works. Andy found the girls to be enthusiastic and interested. We then took them up to the bee hive situated on the top field where each girl had the chance to put on a bee veil and have more of a close encounter with the bees. All girls were very brave, although some got closer than others! A highlight for one girl was being able to identify the queen bee amongst all the rest on one of the ‘supers’ (the storeys in a hive). Many thanks to Andy for giving up his time so generously. The hope is that some of these girls will go onto be Heathfield beekeepers and manage the school hive in the future, with the rest of the school benefiting from some Heathfield honey!
