Scholarships at 11+ and 13+

Heathfield offers Academic, Art, Drama, Music, and Sport Scholarships at 11+ and 13+.

Scholars must demonstrate significant levels of academic, creative, or sporting enthusiasm, achievement and potential. An award carries with it title and prestige and gives the holder access to our scholarship programme to further potential. There is no monetary award or remission of fees. 11+ and 13+ scholarships remain in place until the end of Form V but scholars may re-apply for Sixth Form Scholarships.

Scholars make significant contributions to the school and will develop their skills and potential through support from their personal mentor. 11+ and 13+ subject scholars will be required to follow the relevant subject to GCSE level to retain the scholarship, Sixth Form subject scholars should follow the relevant subject at A Level.

Assessments and auditions for 2025 scholarships will be held on Thursday 21 November and the deadline for receipt of applications is Friday 18 October. For further information and to apply please click on this link.

Sixth Form Scholarships

Heathfield offers Academic, Art, Drama, Music, Photography and Sport Scholarships at 16+. Subject scholars are expected to study the subject of their award at A Level.

Academic Scholarship

11+ and 13+

An academic scholarship will be awarded to the 11+ applicant who performs highly in all aspects of the assessment and at interview. There will be no separate academic scholarship examination or interview and no application is required.

13+ applicants who wish to apply for an academic scholarship will be invited to attend a lesson following which they will participate in a discussion. They will also sit a one-hour aptitude assessment and attend an interview.

Sixth Form

Candidates are expected to have GCSE predictions of grades 7 and above. They will also sit a one-hour aptitude assessment and attend an interview.

Art Scholarship

Candidates are required to present a portfolio which showcases examples of their work. The portfolio should be presented in any format but be A3 minimum and include up to 20 pages showing a range of processes. If any of the outcomes are digital, these should be presented on a memory stick. The portfolio should be built up of original work and it is also expected that final pieces will be shown alongside any preparatory studies. Applicants are also encouraged to include examples of outside interests, such as gallery visits or extracurricular courses.

Candidates will be invited to undertake a drawing assessment and an image analysis activity. There will also be an interview with the Head of Art for candidates to share their portfolio and to discuss their interests and experiences of Art and Design. 11+ and 13+ scholars are expected to study GCSE Art and Sixth Form scholars should take Art and Design A Level.

Drama Scholarship

Candidates are required to prepare and perform a monologue of their own choosing of 2 minutes maximum. A review of no more than 500 words about a play or performance they have seen in the last year should also be submitted with the application.

Applicants for the Sixth Form Scholarship will also be sent an ‘unseen’ scene from a play and will be expected to prepare an outline of how they would stage the scene with regards to performance, directorial and design ideas in readiness to discuss with the Director or Drama.

There will be an interview with the Director of Drama; candidates will also participate in a mixed age workshop. 11+ and 13+ applicants are expected to study GCSE Drama and Sixth Form applicants should be taking Drama and Theatre A Level.

Music Scholarship

11+ candidates are required to perform a sight-reading test and play either two instruments (at least one to be at Grade I) or sing and play one instrument (at Grade I). 13+ candidates are required to perform a sight-reading test and play two instruments (at least one to be at Grade III) or sing and play one instrument (at Grade III). At Sixth Form Music/choral scholarships are awarded to outstanding musicians who play an instrument or sing with exceptional ability (at Grade V). There will also be an interview with the Director of Music.

11+ and 13+ applicants are expected to study GCSE Music and Sixth Form applicants should be taking Music A Level.

Sports Scholarship

Candidates must demonstrate exceptional ability in one or more of the school’s main sports (netball, lacrosse, swimming, athletics, tennis, and cricket) or outstanding ability in another sport. They will be assessed through a variety of physical fitness and endurance tests as well as a game-based activity to assess decision making, communication and teamwork. There will also be an interview with the Director of Sport.

11+ and 13+ applicants are expected to study GCSE PE and Sixth Form applicants should be taking PE A Level.

Photography Scholarship

Sixth Form

Candidates are required to submit a small portfolio of 4-6 photographs they have taken themselves and 1-2 photographs that they like by other photographers. Candidates will be required to provide analytical comment on these images in an interview with the Head of Photography. Applicants should be taking Photography A Level.
