The candidates are expected to work in groups of no more than five, to realise a section of a play in performance. All the girls chose to perform this year and working in two groups they chose to work on two very different pieces. The first was a dark comedy called ‘Incident’ by David Campton, which is set in the lobby of a country house hotel in the 1950s, where a warm welcome awaits all the guests….as long as your name is not Smith! The cast in order of appearance was as follows: Alex (Form V) played Miss Robinson; Lizzy (Form V), Miss Jones; Thea (Form V), Miss Smith; Olivia (Form V), Mrs Blake; and Hira (Form V) was Miss Brown.
The second piece was a section from a contemporary play by April de Angelis, called Playhouse Creatures, which is set in the 17th century and tells the story of highs and lows in the lives of the first women to act upon the English stage. The cast was as follows: Grace (Form V) played Doll Common; Heloise (Form V), Nell Gwynne; Olympia (Form V), Mrs Farley; Sophie (Form V), Mrs Betterton and Phoebe (Form V) was Mrs Marshall. I was really proud of the girls and all the hard work they put in but as the pieces were externally examined, we will have to wait until August to find out how they got on. What I can say is that both pieces were warmly received by the audience and it was lovely to see so many parents in attendance – thank you for coming.
