Ben gave us a comprehensive overview of the process and, in particular, an invaluable insight into the importance of writing an effective personal statement. He emphasised that writing a good personal statement is crucial, especially when applying to the most competitive universities, and presented us with different examples to illustrate how admissions tutors evaluate and grade the applications.
Following this, a presentation was given by our ISCO (Independent Schools Careers Organisation) adviser, Karen Watkins, focusing on ‘Alternative pathways @ 18’. Her talk focused upon the various apprenticeship schemes offered by companies, ranging from business and management to arts and the media. She explained that these schemes are particularly valuable to those who do not wish to enter university and are highly regarded by employers. Furthermore, she provided a detailed list of apprenticeships that are available in the UK and gave guidance on how to research these opportunities.
